4th of July Contoocook
River Race |
The Contoocook River slipped back to a gentle level, and in consort with the non-rainy weather, the 32nd running of the Contoocook River 4th of July race went off with nary a flip nor flounder. 71 paddlers in 48 boats raced the 5 mile course, re-convened at the awards gathering to acknowledge each other's accomplishments, and hustled back to the turkey roast/picnic before the mosquitoes even knew they had lost a good meal. The racing was notable, see below, and the eating and conversation were undertaken in a non-hurried manner. The grass and wildflower maze, towering this year from the continuous rains, was tall enough to conceal small children, deer and the occasional black bear. Maze cheaters were forgiven, for these were the same folks who brought the mouth-watering array of cool salads, fruits, spreads, Swedish limpa bread and Portuguese sweet bread, scrumptious desserts and an anniversary cake (thanks Jimmy and Cheryl). Four turkeys made like Thanksgiving, and another Independence Day was celebrated.
